It may be hard to believe, but Facebook — actually, thefacebook.com — launched 11 years ago today, on February 4, 2004. To commemorate the event, Facebook has initiated #FriendsDay, a day to celebrate how friends improve and give meaning to our lives. From Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook page:

One would hope the irony — that thefacebook’s launch immediately drew the ire of business partners, led to the dissolution of friendships, and was initially conceived as a way for Harvard men to rate the attractiveness of girls on campus — is not lost on Zuckerberg, though he didn’t seem hesitant to hide from history on his page.

You may not have noticed #FriendsDay on any of your feeds just yet. It appears that even Facebook faces an uphill battle when attempting to create a national holiday.
