A ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Series Is Officially in The Works and Heading to HBO

HBO has ordered a “Crazy Rich Asians” series that picks up right after the events of the 2018 film, and much of the original cast is coming back with it. The network announced the eight-episode, hourlong drama Thursday.

Constance Wu and Henry Golding return as series regulars, playing Rachel Chu and Nick Young, the couple who got engaged at the end of the movie. Ronny Chieng is also back as a regular in his role as Nick’s cousin Eddie Cheng. Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will recur as Eleanor Young, Nick’s famously hard-to-impress mother.

Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film with Peter Chiarelli, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Author Kevin Kwan, whose novels launched the franchise, is executive producing alongside Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and director Jon M. Chu. Production starts in 2027.

The order is HBO’s first series pickup since becoming part of Skydance, which officially acquired Warner Bros. just days ago.

Fans have waited eight years for a follow-up. Film sequels based on Kwan’s “China Rich Girlfriend” and “Rich People Problems” were announced after the movie’s success, but neither made it into production. A TV version has been in development since early 2025, and Golding teased last year that a series would be the next chapter.

HBO hasn’t said which parts of Kwan’s sequels the show will adapt. There’s also no word yet on Gemma Chan or Harry Shum Jr., whose characters Astrid and Charlie were set up for their own storyline in the film.

Lim called the project “a Crazy Rich family reunion” in a statement.
