Aerosmith has announced that it is retiring from touring due to Steven Tyler’s vocal injury, a decision that comes nearly a year after the rock legend fractured his larynx during a performance.
The band made the announcement on August 2, revealing the impact of Tyler’s injury on their future plans. Tyler, 76, sustained the injury in September 2023 during a concert, and despite extensive efforts to recover, his condition has not improved sufficiently for him to continue performing.
“As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other,” the band’s statement read. “He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible.”
The band expressed their deep sadness over the decision to retire from touring. “We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision—as a band of brothers—to retire from the touring stage,” the statement continued. “We are grateful beyond words for everyone who was pumped to get on the road with us one last time.”
Aerosmith also extended their gratitude to their fans. “Thanks to you, our Blue Army, that spark caught flame and has been burning for over five decades,” the statement said. “Some of you have been with us since the beginning, and all of you are the reason we made rock ‘n’ roll history.”
The band’s announcement highlights the emotional weight of their decision, acknowledging the significant role their fans have played throughout their career. “It has been the honor of our lives to have our music become part of yours,” the statement continued. “In every club, on every massive tour, and at moments grand and private, you have given us a place in the soundtrack of your lives.”
Tyler’s daughter, Mia, previously shared an update on her father’s condition in February, noting that while he was improving, he was still struggling to adhere to medical advice. “He’s not supposed to be talking sometimes, so I have to literally yell at him and be like, ‘You can’t be on the phone with me right now, let’s just text,’” she told PEOPLE. She added that Tyler often communicates through his phone instead of typing, joking about his tendency to talk excessively despite medical restrictions. “You can’t shut him up—he can’t close that mouth,” she said, but also reassured fans that he was “very healthy.”
