The Grammy winner calls for artists to have the option to opt out of AI-generated song meanings on Spotify.
Lorde is speaking out against Spotify’s newest AI feature, accusing the platform of both getting the facts wrong and overstepping into artistic territory that should remain open to interpretation.
The Grammy winner shared a screenshot on Instagram Stories Thursday of an AI-generated description tied to her song “Current Affairs,” part of Spotify’s “About the Song” feature. The description referenced a moment from her Ultrasound World Tour that Lorde says did not happen during that song.
“Hey @spotify i’m gonna go out on a limb n say we don’t want this,” Lorde wrote in the caption. “Not only is this inaccurate (not the song i did that in) but reducing a song to an ai generated meaning right at the source feels like it limits free interpretation imo. At least make it possible for artists to opt out please.”
“About the Song” is currently in beta. According to Spotify, the feature draws from “third-party sources to surface interesting details and behind-the-scenes moments” about tracks on the platform.
Spotify responded to Lorde’s post with a statement: “We built ‘About the Song’ because fans want to dig into the stories behind the music. It’s still in beta. The info comes from articles across the internet, and when something’s off, we move fast to fix it, like we did here. Getting it right matters to us.”
The exchange lands amid a broader industry reckoning with AI’s growing role in music, from production to recommendation algorithms. Lorde’s post raises a different question: whether AI should be interpreting a song’s meaning at all, and whether artists should have a say in that decision.
