Doja Cat became the first female rapper to headline Coachella, and many could not stop talking about her performance at the festival.

Doja, 28, and her team created a range of outfits that caught the attention of many across the web. The much anticipated April 14 performance saw unique looks like a white hazmat-style suit, a three-piece faux fur set, a bodysuit featuring hand-painted muscles and extra long hair extensions.

“She had some insane ideas about hair, muscles, and bones,” explained Doja’s stylist Brett Alan Nelson in an April 15 interview with Vogue. “There was this idea of this world of masculinity, and playing with the risk factor of using materials and shapes that no one else would feel safe doing on stage.”

Doja also admitted in the interview that she “wanted this show to feel like a textural fever dream. Almost like you’ve fallen into my hair and dove through my head and into my thoughts.” She added that her decision to wear synthetic materials like silicone and plastic is symbolic of a “‘scientific’ exploration of the self — a dissecting of the mind, and deeper understanding of what makes us the way we are.”

“I loved using these creams, whites, eggshell, and bone shades to match with my bleached hair,” she says. “I didn’t want to lean into anything too literal or childlike; I wanted this show to feel like a textural fever dream. Almost like you’ve fallen into my hair and dove through my head and into my thoughts.”

Doja and Nelson also partnered with Entire Studios on a faux-fur look consisting of a blonde crop top, bikini bottoms, and boots made in collaboration with Timberland. “Amala had a very specific color world in mind for this show, and blonde like her hair was one of these colors,” says Nelson. “We came to a final design with this look that is so sexy and so chic.”

In a show that featured a puppet dinosaur skeleton and abundant mud dancing, Doja Cat gave several songs live debuts, including opener “Acknowledge Me” and three collaborations: “N.H.I.E.” with 21 Savage, “Masc” with Teezo Touchdown, and “Urrrge” with A$AP Rocky.

The artist also graced the audience with the hit song “Paint The Town Red” where the stage was transformed into a real mud wrestling ring shortly after with her female dancers for “Wet Vagina.”

While the dancers twerked in the mud and she headed back to the stage, fireworks filled the sky, which marked the finale and closed Weekend 1 of the festival.
