Alt-pop star Charli XCX is engaged to the 1975 drummer George Daniel. The couple shared photos on XCX’s social media accounts to commemorate the occasion.

The pair first collaborated on the song “Spinning” in 2021, and XCX later shared photos of them together on a vacation in 2022, confirming their personal relationship. Daniel has collaborated with a number of popular artists, including Caroline Polachek. He is predominantly known for his work with the 1975, but continues to make a name for himself as a producer. Fans and fellow musicians alike shared congratulatory wishes in the comments, including the 1975’s controversial frontman Matty Healy. Healy wrote a sentimental “I cry” on the post.
The Year of Charli
Prior to the engagement news, Charli XCX has been experiencing a monumental year in her own music career. Her hit song “Speed Drive” was featured in Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed “Barbie”, and the singer collaborated with a number of the biggest acts in pop, most recently Sam Smith. XCX first hit the mainstream with her 2014 hit “Boom Clap” for the John Green novel-to-film adaptation of “The Fault In Our Stars.”
Now, fans of the singer continue to cheer her on for a year full of professional and personal celebrations. Some even went as far as taking note of the lyrics of Daniel and XCX’s collaboration, and how it could have hinted at their engagement prior to this announcement.

Despite the overwhelming amount of well-wishes sent to the couple, some continue to associate Daniel with the mounting controversies that surround his bandmate Matty Healy.

Most recently, Healy appeared to praise Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, mid-concert. West himself has become a widely disgraced figure in the entertainment and pop culture sphere, both for his espousing of antisemitic and far-right views.

While Healy claimed to praise West “separate of the antisemitism”, critics of the alt rock singer feel that he should not have voiced any support for West at all.

The singer’s previous relationship with acclaimed songstress Taylor Swift in the spring of 2022 led many to uncover a number of his previous remarks, which many onlookers found to be offensive. Notably, Healy once called rapper Ice Spice “a chubby Chinese woman with one song” on “the Adam Friedland Show,” among a number of other incidents. Spice later confirmed that Healy had apologized to her.
A wedding date for Charli XCX and George Daniel is to be announced.
