Dave Grohl has engaged a divorce attorney following the revelation that he recently fathered a child outside his 21-year marriage to Jordyn Blum, a source tells PEOPLE.

A representative for Grohl did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Grohl, 55, has been married to Blum, 48, since 2003. The couple shares three daughters: Violet, 18, Harper, 15, and Ophelia, 10.

On Tuesday, September 10, Grohl publicly acknowledged the birth of his new daughter with another woman in an Instagram post. In the statement, Grohl said, “I’ve recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage. I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her. I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness. We’re grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together.”

In the wake of this announcement, Grohl’s eldest daughter, Violet, appears to have deactivated her Instagram account. It is unclear when she took this action, but her account remained inactive as of Wednesday morning.

Grohl and Blum first crossed paths in 2001 while Blum was working as a producer at MTV. They married on August 2, 2003, in a ceremony attended by prominent figures including music executive Clive Davis and Grohl’s former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic.

In a 2003 interview with Teen People, Grohl praised Blum as the first person he had ever been truly honest with. “Now I’ve got nothing to hide,” Grohl said at the time. “When you’re not trying to be someone else, being honest is easy.”

Grohl later recounted in a PEOPLE interview how his perspective on life changed after the overdose of Nirvana drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2001. He had initially been hesitant to pursue a serious relationship but was prompted to reconnect with Blum following Hawkins’ incident. “I had decided I didn’t want to get serious about a relationship because I was single and I was running around — I was free,” Grohl said. “But that was the first thing I thought about when Taylor came out of [his coma]: I had met the woman that I should marry and have children with, and I hadn’t talked to her in months. She said, ‘You’re the last person I thought I’d ever hear from again.’ And I said, ‘Hey, let’s go to dinner.’”

Following their marriage, Blum and Grohl not only became life partners but also collaborators. Blum co-directed the Foo Fighters’ 2002 music video for “Walk a Line” and appeared in the band’s 2011 video for “White Limo.” Additionally, Grohl has cited Blum as an inspiration for songs such as “Statues” and “Burn Away.”

The couple was most recently seen together in July 2024 at Wimbledon in London, where they attended the tennis championships. Their public appearances and collaborations have been well-documented, reflecting their personal and professional partnership.

As Grohl navigates the complexities of his personal life and professional commitments, the situation continues to develop. The involvement of a divorce attorney suggests that Grohl is preparing for potential legal proceedings, and the impact of these developments on his family remains a subject of significant interest.
