Summary:

  • Jerry Bruckheimer confirms development of sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film with Margot Robbie’s involvement. Progress is slow but steady.

  • Robbie’s potential role as female lead in the franchise comes amidst her successful acting career. No release date set yet.

  • Disney weighing reinvention of the franchise with original characters. Last mainline film underperformed compared to predecessors.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise isn’t ready to sink just yet. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed this week that Disney is still developing a sixth installment of the billion-dollar saga, with a new script currently in the works.

Speaking at TheWrap’s TheGrill conference, Bruckheimer explained that while the process has been slow, progress is happening. “We’re working on a script,” he said, noting that veteran writer Ted Elliott contributed before another writer was brought in to “fill in the blanks.”

For years, speculation has swirled about whether Disney would continue the mainline series that starred Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow or reboot the franchise with new leads. While Depp’s involvement remains unlikely, Bruckheimer confirmed that Margot Robbie’s previously announced spinoff is still alive.

“We had two scripts at one point, and then one kind of dropped out and we kind of went with the other one,” he said. “[Margot]’s still involved.”

That project, first reported by The Hollywood Reporter in 2020, was described as a female-led adventure on the high seas. Names like Robbie and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Karen Gillan were floated as potential leads, but Robbie has remained the most consistent attachment.

The last mainline entry, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, hit theaters in 2017. Though it earned nearly $800 million worldwide, it was considered a commercial underperformance compared to earlier films.

Since then, Disney has debated how to steer the franchise forward, weighing loyalty to its original characters against opportunities for reinvention.

Margot Robbie’s Hot Streak

Robbie’s potential role as a swashbuckling lead comes at a high point in her career. In 2023, she starred in Barbie, which grossed over $1.4 billion globally and became a cultural phenomenon.

She followed that with critical acclaim in Amsterdam and earned her third Academy Award nomination for Babylon.

With her production company LuckyChap also behind Saltburn and other buzzy projects, Robbie has cemented herself as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars.

There’s no release date yet for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, and the project still depends on Disney finalizing a script.
