Italian Brain Rot Memes Are Taking Over TikTok

A chimpanzee-banana hybrid called Chimpanzini Bananini. A cappuccino ballerina named Ballerina Cappuccina. A grinning crocodile bomber jet dubbed Bombardiro Crocodilo. Apparently, these are the stars of the latest meme craze engulfing Gen Alpha and the youngest corners of Gen Z.

Welcome to the world of Italian brain rot, an internet phenomenon where AI-generated animals with chaotic, pseudo-Italian names dominate TikTok feeds. These nonsensical visuals are paired with strange visuals, fake-Italian voiceovers, often sounding like a mashup of opera, gibberish, and a malfunctioning espresso machine.

And despite—or because of—their surreal absurdity, kids can’t stop watching.

“There’s history—lore—behind all these animals,” said a UK teacher whose students are obsessed, told The Guardian. “Some of them are at war with each other. And there are songs about them.”

The characters, like Tralalero Tralala (a sneaker-wearing shark) or Blueberrinni Octopussini (an octopus-blueberry hybrid), originated on TikTok earlier this year and quickly exploded into a full-blown digital ecosystem.

One of the first to go viral, Tralalero Tralala, began as just an audio meme—an exaggerated “Tra-la-lero! Tra-la-lala!” chant in mock Italian—before gaining form through AI visuals.

The trend draws parallels to previous viral oddities like Skibidi Toilet—another Gen Alpha meme featuring toilet-headed humans battling camera-headed men. But where Skibidi relied on video storytelling, Italian brain rot thrives on chaos. It’s meme folklore made by and for kids who grew up algorithm-first, raised by iPads and TikTok swipe loops.

The aesthetic is intentionally trashy: jittery animations, uncanny voices, dream logic. Characters like Tung Tung Tung Sahur—a stick figure with a bat urging people to wake up for Ramadan—highlight the trend’s global absurdity. There’s even an Indonesian brain rot offshoot, with equally confounding iconography.

Toys, Games, and Now Fortnite Islands

Kids have started collecting unofficial Italian brain rot merch: 3D-printed toys, Etsy figurines, and stickers of their favorite AI creatures. On marketplaces, creators sell everything from plushies to keychains of Chimpanzini Bananini. Etsy and TikTok Shop are also stocked with handcrafted Ballerina Cappuccinas and Shrimp Jesus magnets.

Now there’s even a clicker game based on the meme: Italian Brainrot Clicker, released in April 2025. Available on browser and mobile, the game lets players collect iconic characters like Tralalero Tralala, Bombardiro Crocodilo, and Cappuccino Assassino by tapping through levels of surreal AI absurdity.

Even Fortnite has gotten the brain rot treatment. Players have built fully explorable custom islands themed around the memeverse—dubbed Brainrot Pit. These maps feature the infamous brainrot characters, sound effects, and battle royal style gameplays, and by the looks of it, thousands are playing these games daily.

Amidst the chaos, trends like this say more about the state of the world than they do about AI. The chaos and doomscrolling seem to be the point. But the implications and effects this may have on the younger generation are yet to be known.
