The Midterm elections had many people posting their “I voted” and encouraging others to go to the polls. Katy Perry, who’s posted for the past week about the importance of voting, joined in with a photo of her at the ballot box. Her Instagram post clearly shows the singer voting for Republican-turned-Democrat billionaire, Rick Caruso for Mayor of Los Angeles. Perry faced backlash for the post from fans online.

“I am voting for a myriad of reasons(see the news) but in particular because Los Angeles is a hot mess #letsgocaruso #yestomeasure28 #yestomeasure1 #doyoubutjustuseyourvoteok????????,” Perry captioned her post.

Perry was not alone in voting for the controversial candidate. Chris Pratt wrote on his Instagram story last week urging Californians to vote for Caruso. Kim Kardashian endorsed him on her story as well saying she “believes in him”.

Many found Perry’s choice of vote hypocritical to the causes she has backed. Perry is a supporter of reproductive rights and even tweeted about voting to protect them earlier this week.

Caruso has a record of donating to anti-abortion politicians. The billionaire was a registered Republican and switched to the Democratic party before entering the mayoral race this year.

Fans of Perry’s were shocked at her post. Perry disabled commenting on the Instagram post but kept her next post’s comment section open.

“You’re a sellout for voting for Caruso. Shame on you for being so disconnected in your celebrity bubble. #LAisnotforsale,” commented one person.

“Sad and disappointed,” comments another fan.

And of course, some stans made memes of the situation by photoshopping her ballot with other important voting matters.

Others were not that surprised as many celebrities put on a progressive act but will vote to protect their wealthy interests.

Last night’s election results were close. Caruso and his opponent, Representative Karen Bass will compete in a runoff content for Mayor of Los Angeles.
