Although Riverdale actress Lili Reinhart did not attend the 2022 Met Gala this past Monday, she did not approve of Kim Kardashian’s dress. This did not have anything to do with the theme or the outfit itself, but instead, she did not like the sentiment behind it. Kardashian was very open about the fact that she lost 16 pounds in just three weeks to fit into Marilyn Monroe’s dress. The dress is iconic as Monroe wore it to sing happy birthday to President John F. Kennedy. But, Reinhart found it harmful that she would be proud of herself for losing a significant amount of weight in a short period of time.

Kardashian says that to lose weight, since the dress itself cannot be altered, she “would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein” according to a Vogue article. She says she did not starve herself, but she was “strict.” Although some found this to be iconic and earned her some praise, many commented on how this can be a harmful message to send. Lili Reinhart was one of those people who provided criticism, writing on Instagram that “To openly admit to starving yourself for the sake of the Met Gala. When you know very well that millions of young men and women are looking up to you and listening to your every word.”

In her post, she criticizes Kardashian for saying that she was starving and had not eaten carbs in the past month to lose weight just for a dress. Some argued it was more than just a dress, as Monroe had worn it herself. Reinhart, however, claims that “the ignorance is other-worldly and disgusting.” She also asks her viewers to “stop supporting these stupid, harmful celebrities whose entire image revolves around their bodies.”

Although some agreed with Reinhart, the conversation devolved into what celebrities do to fit into a role. For example, sometimes celebrities lose weight to play a certain character, and people do not have a problem with that. Others, however, said that many do have a problem with this, but it has been normalized. One person on Twitter ultimately said it was her choice what she does with her body, writing that “in the end, it’s her body her choice. If she wanted to fit in the dress it was up to her which way to do it.” Still, many thought that although she made her own choice to lose weight, others were concerned that she was being open about it, as they worried it would send a bad message.
