Grammy-winning artist Lizzo is shedding new light on her relationship with boyfriend Myke Wright, revealing that their connection started as a friendship long before it turned romantic.
The “Truth Hurts” singer appeared on the Thursday, May 15, episode of the podcast Therapuss with Jake Shane, where she opened up about how her relationship with Wright evolved from platonic co-workers to life partners.
During a candid segment in which Lizzo, 37, and podcast host Jake Shane, 25, offered relationship advice to listeners, the conversation turned to the idea of friends becoming lovers — and Lizzo revealed that she had lived that experience firsthand.
“I had a friends-to-lovers trope,” she said, smiling as she recalled the early days of their relationship. “We both worked on this one TV show, Wonderland, for MTV. I was the music girl, he was the comedy guy.”
Lizzo, known for her vulnerability and body-positive messaging, explained that their initial connection was built on mutual respect and deep conversation, something she found refreshing in an industry often driven by fast-paced, surface-level interactions.
“I was just like, ‘He’s my best friend,’” she continued. “I didn’t have any guy friends like that — well, I did because, you know, I’m in the music industry. But I was like, ‘Wow, I can really talk to him.’”

The About Damn Time artist said their emotional bond grew naturally over several years. “We had this crazy bond for years,” she told Shane. “I do love that we were friends first, so that means we can talk about anything.”
“He’s your best friend,” Shane responded.
“Literally,” Lizzo agreed. “That is low-key like a fantasy, right? It’s like a ‘BookTok’ dream to be like, ‘Oh my God, he was my best friend.’”
A Love Story Years in the Making
Lizzo and Myke Wright’s romance first made headlines in April 2022 after she appeared on Andy Cohen’s Radio Andy show. During the interview, Cohen asked about a mystery man Lizzo had been photographed with. The singer confirmed the relationship — albeit reluctantly — saying, “Yeah, whatever, yeah.”
Two months later, the couple made their red carpet debut at a “For Your Consideration” event promoting her Amazon Prime Video reality competition show Watch Out for the Big Grrrls. Since then, they have made multiple public appearances together, including at the 2023 Pre-GRAMMY Gala and the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar Party.
In December 2022, Lizzo further opened up about their relationship during an interview on The Howard Stern Show, explaining that while she had known Wright for years, it took time for her to be emotionally ready for a serious relationship.

“We’re very much locked in,” she told Stern. “I had a lot of s— to do, and I still was very much in my ‘I feel unlovable’ place, and I still was very much not where I wanted to be career-wise.”
She said that even if someone came along who made her feel “googly gaga,” her emotional walls were so high that a meaningful, intimate connection was nearly impossible.
“Even if a person came around that I was crazy about, I had these wild defenses up that made it almost impossible for a true, intimate relationship to occur,” she said.
Breaking Down Emotional Barriers
Since going public, Lizzo has been transparent about how Wright has positively impacted her life and mindset. In a 2023 interview, she credited him with helping her reframe how she views topics like weight loss, self-love, and vulnerability.
In that interview, Lizzo said Wright helped her see weight loss not as a moral failing or betrayal of her values, but simply as a health decision. “He helped me unpack a lot of internalized feelings I didn’t even realize I had,” she said.
Fans of the artist have long praised her for challenging beauty standards and promoting radical self-acceptance. Her openness about the complexity of love and self-worth resonates with many — and her reflections on her relationship with Wright only add to that message.
“He doesn’t try to fix me,” Lizzo said in a previous interview. “He just sees me.”
Romance in the Spotlight
Despite her global fame and larger-than-life persona, Lizzo has managed to keep many aspects of her relationship with Wright relatively private. The couple rarely posts about each other on social media, and public appearances remain occasional and intentional.
Still, moments like her podcast interview with Jake Shane offer rare, intimate glimpses into the softer side of the superstar’s personal life — one that balances vulnerability, friendship, and romantic connection.
Fans quickly reacted to the podcast episode, sharing clips and quotes across social media. “A friends-to-lovers arc is elite,” one fan tweeted. “Lizzo and Myke are literally real-life fan fiction.”
Shane, a rising Gen Z podcast star with a loyal online following, thanked Lizzo at the end of the episode for her honesty and humor, calling the episode one of his favorites to date.
What’s Next for Lizzo?
After a whirlwind few years of touring, awards shows, and new music releases, Lizzo has continued to hint at taking more time for herself and focusing on inner healing. While no new album release date has been announced, the singer confirmed in a recent interview that she has been working on new material — but on her own terms.
“This is a new chapter for me,” she said. “And I’m writing it with love — for myself, and for the people around me who make me feel seen.”
With a successful career, a devoted fan base, and a solid relationship built on trust and friendship, Lizzo seems to be exactly where she wants to be — and on her own time.
