Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is on the verge of bringing a new vision to the screen with an upcoming adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel American Psycho. The project, which is currently in final negotiations with Lionsgate, aims to provide a fresh interpretation of the story, centering on the infamous character Patrick Bateman.

American Psycho was previously adapted into a film in 2000, directed by Mary Herron and featuring Christian Bale in the role of Bateman. The movie gained a cult following for its darkly satirical exploration of 1980s consumerism and the moral emptiness of its lead character, a wealthy investment banker living a double life as a serial killer. The 2000 adaptation has since become a cultural touchstone, making the task of reinterpreting such a well-known story all the more significant.

Scott Z. Burns, a seasoned screenwriter known for his work on projects like The Report and Contagion, is tasked with writing the script for this new adaptation. The film is produced by Frenesy Films and is described as not being a direct remake of the original but rather a new take on the source material. Sam Pressman of Pressman Films, whose father, Edward R. Pressman, produced the 2000 film, will serve as executive producer for the project.

“We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate,” said Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, in a statement. “Luca is a brilliant artist and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.”

Guadagnino’s most recent project, Challengers, was released in theaters earlier this year and stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Fast. The director is also gearing up for the release of Queer, featuring Daniel Craig, which is set to hit theaters on November 27 through A24. Additionally, Guadagnino is in postproduction on After the Hunt, a film starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield.

Burns, who will be penning the script for American Psycho, has made a name for himself with a variety of projects. His recent work includes the Apple TV+ series Extrapolations, which features an ensemble cast including Meryl Streep, Sienna Miller, Kit Harington, and Edward Norton. Burns also directed The Report in 2019, showcasing his ability to tackle complex narratives. His writing credits extend to The Bourne Ultimatum, further solidifying his reputation in Hollywood.

The original novel, known for its controversial and graphic depictions of violence and consumer culture, poses unique challenges and opportunities for adaptation. While the 2000 film captured the essence of Bateman’s disturbing duality, Guadagnino’s version promises to explore the story from a fresh angle, potentially resonating with contemporary audiences facing similar societal critiques.

Guadagnino’s storytelling style is characterized by rich visuals and emotional depth, which could provide a compelling new lens through which to view Bateman’s world. As society continues to grapple with issues related to identity, morality, and the consequences of unchecked capitalism, this adaptation has the potential to spark meaningful conversations.

Represented by CAA, Range Media Partners, and Goodman Genow, Guadagnino’s career has been marked by critically acclaimed films that delve into complex themes and character studies. Meanwhile, Burns is represented by UTA, Range Media Partners, and Jackoway Austen, reflecting the strong network of talent involved in bringing this project to life.

As the film gears up for production, fans of both the novel and the previous adaptation are eagerly anticipating how Guadagnino and Burns will reinterpret this classic tale. With the combination of Guadagnino’s artistic vision and Burns’ sharp writing, the new adaptation of American Psycho aims to deliver a gripping experience that honors the original while also pushing boundaries in new directions.
