Nicholas Brendon, the actor best known for playing Xander Harris on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” died Friday of natural causes. He was 54.
His family confirmed the news in a statement, saying Brendon “passed in his sleep” and asking for privacy as they grieve. “He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create,” the statement read.
Brendon appeared on all seven seasons of the groundbreaking WB drama alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan, from 1997 to 2003. His other credits included a recurring role on “Criminal Minds” and the 2000 Sundance film “Psycho Beach Party.”
In recent years, Brendon had shifted his focus to painting and visual art. His family noted he had been receiving treatment for a previously disclosed diagnosis and “was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.”
He is survived by his identical twin brother, Kelly Donovan.
