The “Peaky Blinders” team is firing back at Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis for including clips of the show in his latest campaign advertisement. DeSantis announced that he was throwing his hat in the ring for the 2024 presidential election, and much of his campaign promises include a national expansion of his highly controversial “Don’t Say Gay” bill.’The advertisement, which has since been deleted from DeSantis’ platforms, critiques former President Donald J. Trump for supporting the LGBTQ+ community, specifically transgender people.

DeSantis has received praise from the right and criticism from the left over his repeat support for censoring education. Much of the legislation revolves around removing mentions of LGBTQ+ people in education, and restricting the community’s rights.

The advertisement campaign was called out for alleged homophobia by the “Peaky Blinders” team. They claim that the footage was not obtained with the proper license.

Social Media Response

Many fans of the show are applauding the team for distancing themselves from the right wing politics of the DeSantis administration.

Others point out that the plot of “Peaky Blinders” also centers Cillian Murphy’s character attempting to assassinate a known far-right figure. The character was based on a real historical figure who sympathized with Adolf Hitler. Many of DeSantis’ policies have been compared to early legislation in Nazi Germany.

Fans of Cillian Murphy, who stars as Thomas Selby in the acclaimed Netflix period drama, are encouraging the actor to sue DeSantis’ campaign team.

Murphy is yet to comment directly on the campaign video.
