Taylor Swift and the 1975 frontman Matty Healy allegedly broke up. A source told Entertainment Tonight that the pair reportedly “realized they were not compatible.” The breakup comes after weeks of controversy surrounding the relationship, stemming from Healy’s numerous contentious comments throughout his career. Swift reportedly split with her boyfriend of six years, actor Joe Alwyn, months before it was publicly reported. The split ocurred before her alleged personal relationship with Healy began.

Healy confirmed that Swift and himself collaborated on several unreleased songs for her album “Midnights.” The pair first sparked relationship rumors nearly a decade ago when Swift wore a shirt from 1975’s tour and Healy was wore a shirt from Swift’s “1989” tour. After learning of the backstory, Swifties were initially excited for what could have been a powerful couple in music. The tables turned as several controversial tales about Healy began to come to light.

The Public’s Reaction To Healy Gate

Healy recently spoke to the New Yorker in a profile piece, explaining more about his satirical take on leftist activism. Some readers felt that the profile finally gave the indie rocker a chance to clear his name, until the last few paragraphs. The singer said that “you’re either deluded or you are, sorry, a liar. You’re either lying that you are hurt, or you’re a bit mental for being hurt,” in reference to the several controversial podcast anecdotes of his that have resurfaced in recent months. The reaction to his criticisms was slammed by the internet.

Healy notoriously made insensitive comments about rapper Ice Spice (who went on to collaborate with Swift on a “Karma” remix) on “The Adam Friedland Show.” In addition to this incident, a previous episode of an extension of the show, then titled “Cumtown”, revealed that Healy once spoke about watching adult films that “brutalized” Black women. Prior to these two incidents, the singer additionally once stated that it would be “emasculating” to date Swift.

On the 1975’s current tour, some concertgoers think that he did a Nazi salute on stage. He later clarified that it was an American military salute, as it was performed while he sang the lyrics to “Love It If We Made It”, in which he quotes a previous tweet from former President Donald Trump. The tweet read “Thank you Kanye, very cool”, and the salute was intended to condemn Kanye’s antisemitism.

The Alleged Breakup Heard Around The World

Fans of Swift were happy to see news of the breakup, though continued to wish their favorite singer well. The amount of controversy surrounding Healy quickly bled into Swift’s own fanbase, with many questioning her own morals for being associated with someone like Healy. Many are taking the clean break as a positive thing. Some speculate that the breakup happened before Swift dropped the “Karma” collaboration with Ice Spice, making it clear whose side she was on.

Others joked that she saw rapper Azealia Banks’ Instagram story about the 1975 frontman and it convinced her to break up with him.

Neither Healy nor Swift have commented directly on the situation, though their upcoming music may speak volumes about it.
