In a recent TikTok that went viral, viewers were shocked after a Black woman confronts her white neighbor after hearing him yell racial slurs through the wall. And although this was shocking, many found his response to the confrontation even more unbelievable. After the woman confronted him and informed him she could hear him using offensive racial slurs, he responds with “oops” and informed her they were kidding. In the TikToker’s caption, she writes that “I can’t even escape racism at my own home.” Concerned commenters voiced their disbelief, as one user writes “Whoops, my bad. I’ll say it quieter next time.”

Not everyone shared the same sentiment, however. Some commenters said that he said it on his property and it was unfair of her to be upset that he said it. “He shouldn’t be saying that stuff, but unfortunately he does have the right to say whatever he wants in his home.” Others agreed, saying that since he did not say it to her, she had no grounds to be offended or upset. In a follow-up video from the creator, she explains that he later approached the woman with a sheriff. After admitting to using the racial slurs in front of the sheriff, the man wanted the woman to accept his apology. Some users had found the man’s school and encouraged people to write to the university to inform them of the incident. “Hi, lawyer here! Even if the law school doesn’t do anything, contact the bar association because there is NO way he will pass his moral character” one user advised.

The creator noted that when she did not accept the man’s apology and asked the sheriff to ensure there would be zero contact between the two of them, she said that the man reacted poorly and became very angry. She notes that the school, Mercer in Macon, GA, was not taking the issue seriously and asked people to continue to reach out to the university. Although some were happy to do so, others maintained that the man was in his house and is allowed to do what he pleases.
Although some wanted proof, as the videos only captured the creator’s experience and response, not the yelling of slurs itself. But, since the man admitted to it and calmly apologized in the video, many pointed out that it was clear he did say those things.
