  • The Taylor Swift backlash is in full force, and we care about it WAY too much. Backlash part one: rumors spread that she’s faking her relationship with Tom Hiddleston for the sake of a music video or social experiment of some kind. Part two: her ex Calvin Harris called her out for claiming to have written his latest hit song, when according to him she just wrote the lyrics. Part three: noted Swift rival Katy Perry got in on it all. But the latest, greatest backlash just broke this past weekend.

The beef between Kanye West and Taylor Swift goes back years. Everyone remembers the time he grabbed the mic from her at the VMAs in 2009. But after an apology and years of détente, the drama reignited when he released the song “Famous.” In it, he claims he and Taylor “might still have sex” because he “made that bitch famous.” Taylor’s reps responded, angrily, that she disapproved and was not consulted about the song — a claim Kanye vigorously denied:

  • Then Kanye blew things up even more by releasing the video for “Famous,” in which a nude wax sculpture of TayTay appears. Taylor was, again, not happy.

Kim Kardashian, Kanye’s wife, made a veiled threat that she was going to “protect [her] husband” from Swift on the latest episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Here’s the clip:

  • All this tension boiled over this weekend when Kim leaked a recording of a phone call between Kanye and Taylor on Snapchat:

  • In the video, Kanye recites part of the offending line to Taylor: the “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex” bit, but NOT the “I made that bitch famous” bit. Taylor responds by saying the line is a “compliment” and that it’s “really nice” that Kanye asked her about it.

Kimye supporters quickly jumped to call this a flawless victory and complete burial of Taylor Swift. The hashtag #KimExposedTaylorParty quickly trended on Twitter, garnering thousands of memes and reaction GIFs. But Taylor was quick to defend herself, taking to Twitter and Instagram to share this post:

  • She has a point. No video has been released of Kanye telling her about the line, and it was pretty skeezy of Kim and Kanye to secretly record and release the video of their call without Taylor’s consent. But at the same time, there’s this statement from Swift’s reps, published in GQ, that claims this phone call never happened:

“Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single ‘Famous’ on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, ‘I made that bitch famous.’ ”

In other words, no one is 100% in the right, and the biggest cultural moment of the year so far makes everybody look bad — especially those of us who care about it.
