There’s a new challenge out there and, of course, parents are being warned not to let their kids attempt it.
The Zoom Challenge is very simple. All you need is a Spotify account, a pair of legs and a friend. It typically involves a kid sitting straight-legged on the floor while the first verse of Lil Yachty’s “Mickey” plays. And then, when the “Zoom” happens, someone else pulls you by the legs.
And it’s hard not to watch a bunch of these in a row without getting really into it.
But, even though this challenge doesn’t involve eating Tide Pods or snorting condoms, you can still see how it could be dangerous. Women’s Health magazine talked to Dr. Jennifer Wider, who called the challenge “a parent’s worst nightmare” and said “smaller bodies, and even unprepared larger ones can be grabbed and moved too quickly, increasing the risk of neck injuries, whiplash, and concussion.”
But from what we can tell, nobody’s been legitimately hurt from this challenge yet, and even those in the “fail” versions of these videos seem to be having some fun with it.
That said, it’s hard to ignore the thought that someone is going to get hurt at some point. After all, some of these kids are yanked really fast. And even if it looks fun, we really hope you won’t do this with your pets. It looks cruel.
The Zoom Challenge is exploding in popularity, even though when the song came out back in March, plenty of people filmed their own “Zoom Challenges,” which was really just a dance.
Lil Yachty himself has talked about the new version of the Zoom Challenge on social media. He retweeted a couple of his favorites and wrote “Wait zoom challenge really viral lol.” In fact, the one Yachty shared on Instagram might be the best one we’ve seen.
He’s also promoting on Instagram something called the Broken Shoulder Challenge…which is pretty self-explanatory once you watch it. That challenge is based on the Lil Yachty song “NBA Young Boat”
Though interestingly enough, the shoulder dance may have originated with @mosthatedmaine on Instagram, who first did it over Mickey.” It all comes full circle!
