At the 2024 Los Angeles DragCon, Candis Cayne highlighted the urgent need for continued LGBTQ+ activism, emphasizing that the fight for rights and protection is far from over. Known for her groundbreaking role as Carmelita Rainer on ABC’s “Dirty Sexy Money,” where she became the first transgender actress to play a recurring transgender character on primetime TV, Cayne has made a significant impact both as an actress and as an advocate. Born in 1971 in Maui, Hawaii, and initially gaining fame as a drag performer in New York City’s club scene, Cayne has consistently used her platform to champion LGBTQ+ rights and inclusivity. At DragCon, she reiterated the importance of perseverance in the ongoing struggle for equality, stating, “For a while there we thought we were done and it was all going uphill, but it’s not done and we have to get back to fighting.”
