Twitter Watch Out, China's Wei Bo's on the rise

  • For the most part, the social media in China has been made up of copycat sites, based on U.S. sites like Facebook and Twitter. As China's economy steadily increases, will they begin to compete with the U.S. in online innovation? Our friends at Column Five Media run down a comparison of U.S. and Chinese Internet leaders, and ask you to predict how it will change in the near future.

  • Although Google and Facebook both have tremendous leads over their Chinese copycats when it comes to traffic, Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter, has more registered accounts and users than Twitter. Twitter has 56 million registered users to Wei Bo's 140 million accounts, and more active users than Twitter (21 million for Twitter; 50 million for Wei Bo.) Apart from their copy sites China also has Tencent, which really has no U.S. counterpart and is the third largest internet business in the world.

Do you think that China will soon add Internet innovation to their ever-growing economy?
