  • The Lemon Face Challenge may be the next big viral craze to support a worthy cause.

It’s been a few years since every celebrity alive took the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money for ALS research. Now, a new challenge is being widely shared which should make America’s citrus farmers very happy. It’s called The Lemon Face Challenge, and it involves biting into a wedge of lemon and swallowing it. The challenge itself, however, is not new. In fact, back in 2014, many German YouTube star did it to raise money for hunger prevention around the world.

Today, it’s being attached to a new cause, and it’s all because of a 10-year-old girl. This latest iteration of the challenge was started by Aubreigh Nicholas from Mobile, Alabama. Aubreigh was diagnosed in September 2017 with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas (DIPG) – a brain tumor considered among the most aggressive forms of childhood cancer. There’s no cure for DIPG, and 90% of children die within two years of their diagnosis.

Aubreigh and her family, however, refuse to give up. They created a Facebook page called Aubreigh’s Army and posted a video where Aubreigh kicked off the challenge. After taking the challenge herself, she nominated Alabama football coach Nick Saban to join her, and he did.

A YouCaring Fundraising page has raised over $43,000 so far for Aubreigh’s treatment. And beyond that, people are now becoming more aware of DIPG. Those who have already participated in the challenge include — the hosts of Good Morning Britain, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Mississippi State Senator, Michael Watson.

So, clearly, this thing is beginning to make its way up the ranks. Sooner or later it’ll get up to President Trump, and he has to do it, right? Even if he has to wash it down with a few bites of well-done steak and a glass of water (which we’ll tell him are liberal tears).

Now, it’ll be tough for the Lemon Face Challenge to get quite as big as the Ice Bucket Challenge, which was everywhere for months, but even a little bit of awareness can go a long way. Best of luck to Aubreigh and her family who are doing great work raising awareness about this illness despite what must be a tough and painful time.
