The cast of Discovery Channel’s hit show, “Deadliest Catch,” stops by the Samsung Smart Lounge at SXSW 2013 to talk about the upcoming season of the show, being new to Twitter, Captain Johnathan’s children’s book, and being nice people outside of the show.
They may be skilled at sea, but these TV stars are still getting used to the politics of Twitter. Not only do they feel guilty for wasting time and ignoring their families when they get sucked into social media, but it’s also damaging their mojo while fishing. Sig Hansen points out that with AIS and VMS trackers, fans can know where their boats are and call them out for not being where they said they’d be. “We get paid to lie for a living and you got some tweeter dude that’s telling everybody where we’re at,” Sig Hansen says.
As Johnathan Hillstrand points out, Twitter is a good tool for promoting, but once the men are out at sea, they’re pretty happy to completely disconnect.
With season 9 of “Deadliest Catch” coming up in April, the captains have many reasons to be proud of all that time spent out on the water. “Reality TV really started in the last decade and we’re still out there,” Keith Colburn says. He stresses that the series is successful because the stories are real. “Mother Nature is the producer. We don’t know when that next big wave is coming.” Hillstrand adds that in this upcoming season, GoPro cameras will be planted all over the boat to present even more amazing, first-hand footage.
“It’s changed our industry for the better,” Hansen says of the show. “Nobody complains about the price of seafood anymore. They get it.” Colburn adds, “It’s raised awareness about fisheries, about sustainable fisheries, about the hard blue collar work we do out there.”
