For the past year or so, a corner of social media has been quietly obsessed with hiding tap-to-pay cards inside homemade magic wands to pay for things at checkout. Cash App watched the trend, then decided to just sell the wand.
Launched June 4, the Cash App Wand is a $25 pearlescent, star-shaped NFC-enabled keychain that links directly to a user’s Cash App Card and works anywhere Visa tap-to-pay is accepted. It is, technically, a debit card in wand form. The pitch is that it’s useful in moments when digging out a phone is inconvenient, like concerts, festivals or venues that don’t allow phones on the floor.
Setup is straightforward: open the app, hold the Tag to the back of your phone and it links automatically. No minimum balance required. Real-time transaction alerts, 24/7 fraud monitoring and in-app lock controls are included. The Wand is positioned as the first product in a broader hardware line called Cash App Tags. “The number of form factors we can create is nearly limitless,” said Thomas Templeton, Hardware Lead at Block. “From clothing to jewelry, almost any item can become a way to pay with this technology.” More limited-edition Tag designs are expected in the coming weeks, with wider availability later this summer.
The product is available now through Cash App while supplies last, for eligible users ages 13 and up, at cash.app/tags.
