Arnold Schwarzenegger announced his support for Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in a post on X (formerly Twitter) today. The former California governor emphasized that he prioritizes his identity as an American over party affiliation, stating, “I will always be an American before I am a Republican.”

In his candid post, Schwarzenegger expressed dissatisfaction with both major political parties. “Let me be honest with you: I don’t like either party right now,” he wrote. He criticized Republicans for losing sight of the benefits of a free market, accumulating deficits, and rejecting election outcomes. He also voiced concerns about Democrats, stating, “They aren’t any better at dealing with deficits, and I worry about their local policies hurting our cities with increased crime.”

The 76-year-old actor and politician lamented the current state of politics, saying, “It is probably not a surprise that I hate politics more than ever.” He added, “If you are a normal person who isn’t addicted to this crap, you probably understand. I want to tune out.”

However, he noted the importance of being engaged in the political process, particularly when it comes to respecting election results. “Rejecting the results of an election is as un-American as it gets,” he asserted. For Schwarzenegger, America represents a “shining city on a hill,” and he finds it deeply unpatriotic to label the nation as a “trash can for the world.” This sentiment underlines his motivation to publicly endorse Harris and Walz. “That’s why, this week, I am voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz,” he concluded.

In his post, Schwarzenegger explained that he felt compelled to speak out due to his unique position as a former Republican governor. “I also understand that people want to hear from me because I am not just a celebrity, I am a former Republican governor,” he said.

During his time in office from 2003 to 2011, Schwarzenegger governed as a moderate, often clashing with the California Republican Party. His political career, much like his film career, has been marked by a blend of celebrity and political activism.

The relationship between Schwarzenegger and former President Donald Trump has been notably strained. After Trump’s election in 2016, Schwarzenegger briefly hosted a season of “The Apprentice.” However, he chose not to return, citing the “baggage” associated with the show. In response to Schwarzenegger’s departure, Trump dismissed him, claiming the show suffered from “bad (pathetic) ratings.”

Following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, Schwarzenegger took to social media to denounce Trump, stating that he would “go down in history as the worst president ever.” He accused Trump of attempting to stage a coup by “misleading people with lies.”

Schwarzenegger elaborated on the qualities he finds troubling in Trump’s leadership style, writing about a candidate who will “not respect your vote unless it is for him” and who incited his supporters to storm the Capitol while watching passively. He criticized Trump’s focus on tax cuts benefiting donors and wealthy individuals while neglecting broader societal issues. “A candidate who thinks Americans who disagree with him are bigger enemies than China, Russia, or North Korea – that won’t solve our problems,” he argued.

He warned that continuing to support Trump would result in “four more years of bullshit with no results that makes us angrier and angrier, more divided, and more hateful.” Schwarzenegger stressed the need to move past this chapter in American history, stating, “I know that former President Trump won’t do that. He will divide, he will insult, he will find new ways to be more un-American than he already has been.”

In his call for unity, Schwarzenegger highlighted the importance of rejecting division and focusing on constructive solutions for the nation. His endorsement of Harris and Walz represents not only a personal choice but also a broader message about the need for leaders who prioritize the well-being of all Americans over partisan politics.
