Brian Wilson, the musical force behind The Beach Boys and a defining architect of American pop, died on June 11, 2025. He was 82.

Wilson’s death was confirmed by his family, who shared a brief statement acknowledging his passing and requesting privacy. The loss follows Wilson’s public health struggles in recent years, including a neurocognitive disorder akin to dementia, first disclosed in 2024.

Born and raised in Inglewood, California, Wilson formed The Beach Boys with his brothers Carl and Dennis, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Their sun-drenched harmonies and surf-rock anthems quickly became cultural staples, beginning with the hit single “Surfin’” in 1961. By 1963, Wilson had started producing for other artists and reshaping the band’s sound with deeper emotional and musical ambition.

That ambition culminated in Pet Sounds (1966), widely regarded as a pop masterpiece. Initially met with mixed commercial response, the album later earned induction into the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry and remains one of the most studied records in music history.

Wilson’s career was defined by its innovation as much as it was by personal challenges.

He retreated from touring in 1964 after suffering a panic attack, dedicating himself to studio work. He later attempted to complete Smile, a sprawling follow-up to Pet Sounds, which was shelved for decades.
