Rihanna is trending after she reportedly invited Johnny Depp to a Savage x Fenty fashion show. The internet hasn’t been able to get enough of Rihanna lately. Between news of her Super Bowl HalfTime Show, to finally releasing some new music, she’s been trending on and off for a few weeks. But this announcement is seeing a lot of Twitter users with mixed opinions.

Rihanna has become an incredibly business savvy celebrity. She launched her own makeup line, Fenty Beauty, back in 2017. Just a year later, she introduced Savage x Fenty, Rihanna’s own lingerie line that integrated a subscription model in return for lower costs on items.

Savage x Fenty was acclaimed in its first few years for being size inclusive and using models with diverse body types. It’s become an increasingly popular business. The company makes seventeen million dollars annually, according to Zippia.

The Controversy

However, Rihanna herself has been through a lot in life besides just her businesses. Many Twitter users are pointing that out in regards to her invitation to Johnny Depp. Rihanna’s split with Chris Brown was very much in the public eye. She spoke out about being a victim of domestic abuse, and people are drawing that parallel between her and Johnny Depp.

Like this Twitter user who wrote, “Rihanna took a lot of hate from Chris Brown Stans. She knows the truth and hurt and pain of being mocked for being a victim of abuse, meaning she wanted to make a message that she, as a true DV victim, recognize Johnny as a true DV victim.” This is why #ThankYouRihanna started trending, as some fans flocked to celebrate her for acknowledging their shared experiences.

But others thought the move was a bit strange, with many accusing Rihanna of picking the wrong side of the argument. Many believe Depp is at least partially guilty in the Depp and Heard case. In turn, some are upset with Rihanna for platforming an abuser. The move is being seen by many as an attempt to recover Depp’s image. This user kept it short and simple, writing, “I never thought I would say this but: F**k Rihanna.”

Neither side of the argument seem as if they’ll let up anytime soon, and it will be interesting to see how or if this will affect Rihanna’s upcoming performance at the Super Bowl.
