Rock icon and former Fleetwood Mac member Stevie Nicks is now to be immortalized through her very own Barbie doll. The doll wears an ensemble matching her tour outfit for the band’s acclaimed and storied “Rumours”, and Nicks made the announcement at Madison Square Garden to a crowd of multigenerational fans.

The Barbie x Stevie collaboration comes at time in which Mattel is back in the mainstream conversation, following the record-breaking blockbuster release of Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie” this past summer. Nicks claimed that she “had Barbie with her” for a few months, and that the doll version of herself had been accompanying her on her tour dates.

Mattel then posted an ad in which Stevie’s Barbie teaches Ken how to play “Edge of Seventeen” on the guitar.

Nicks rose to prominence first in a duo alongside fellow Fleetwood Mac member Lindsey Buckingham, called Buckingham Nicks. The duo later joined Mick Fleetwood and Christine McVie to create the two-time Grammy winning Fleetwood Mac behind hit 1970s albums “Rumours”, “Tusk”, and more. Nicks went on to have a successful solo career, releasing “Bella Donna” “The Wild Heart” and more. Nicks went on to collaborate with Tom Petty, Don Henley, and more. The singer-songwriter is currently on tour, performing some solo dates and some dates alongside Billy Joel.

The “Silver Springs” Effect

“Silver Springs,” has captured the attention of many. Nicks famously wrote the song about her breakup with fellow Fleetwood Mac band member Lindsey Buckingham.  The band’s “Rumours” album, which revolved around the band’s numerous interpersonal relationships, maintains to influence modern storytelling, and even Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel and Amazon Prime Video adapted series “Daisy Jones and the Six.”

The parallels between the performance and the 2023 show have many recalling the true power of the moment, with some even jokingly saying that Stevie must have put a spell on Buckingham with her emotionally moving vocals.

Gen Zers continue to use the song to cope with their own relationship troubles. Some mothers and daughters also bond over the intergenerational context of the song, showing how truly timeless of a track it is.

Nicks, a rock-n-roll legend in the music industry, does not shy away with listening to younger artists’ perspectives, or collaborating with them. She continues to thank Taylor Swift for writing her track “You’re On Your Own Kid,” which appeared on her most recent “Midnights” album. She said that Swift’s song specifically resonated with her when she lost her bandmate and close friend of several decades, Christine McVie.

Swift and Nicks performed together at the Grammy Awards in 2010, singing a mashup of Swift’s “Today Is a Fairytale” and Nicks’ “Rhiannon.” The performance was met with largely negative reactions due to technical difficulties that caused Swift to fall flat sonically. Specifically, a music blogger named Bob Lefsetz wrote that “now everybody knows that Taylor Swift can’t sing.” The incident inspired a hit song on her following album, “Speak Now,” titled “Mean.” Since the performance, fans believe that Nicks and Swift have remained friends.

Nicks traditionally gifts young musicians with a gold crescent moon necklace as a sign of friendship, and Swift was spotted wearing the necklace multiple times in the years since the performance. Swift’s “You’re On Your Own Kid” tells the story of the growing pains associated with entering young adulthood and leaving home, specifically in the spotlight. Nicks recalled often leaning on McVie for support, and still feels lost without her friend who experienced the height of Fleetwood Mac’s fame with her.

Another video clip recently making the rounds on TikTok showed Nicks talking about how the “Twilight” franchise inspired her music. Nicks discussed the films on an episode of  “The Late Late Show With James Corden” in an episode alongside “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner.
