God dammit, Matt.

The successful black woman who produced “Dear White People” tried to talk to Matt Damon about his super-white producers on “Project Greenlight,” and he handled it every bit as badly as everyone is saying he did, and I had to sit and cringe silently for five minutes before I could bring myself to watch the clip.

Aaaaaagh, god dammit it’s awful. I want to like you, Matt Damon, I really do.

As Jezebel explains, experienced filmmaker Effie Brown appeared on the fourth season premiere of “Project Greenlight,” in which Matt Damon and Ben Affleck give first-time filmmakers the chance to make a movie – and this season, the group of producers brought in to choose the finalists is a bunch of white dudes and one white woman.

Discussing one of the films, Brown expressed concern that there was only one black character and her storyline had the potential to be incredibly problematic. “I just would want to urge people to think about, whoever this director is, the way that they’re going to treat the character of Harmony. Her being a prostitute, the only black person being a hooker who gets hit by her white pimp.”

Damon quickly started arguing with her and talking over her, insisting that his white dude group brought up that issue themselves and they didn’t need to hire a black director to do the character justice. “I think on the surface they look like one thing, but they might end up giving us something that we don’t want.”

And then, that moment of smug whitesplaining that will follow Damon wherever he goes forever: “When we’re talking about diversity, you do it in the casting of the film, not the casting of the show.”

Brown’s snort of disbelief summed things up pretty well. “Wow. Okay.”
