Fans of Olivia Rodrigo do not need to be sour about her lack of new releases much longer. The disney star turned Grammy winning-singer-songwriter announced the first single ahead of her suspected sophomore album. The track, titled “Vampire”, drops on June 30. The single’s cover art features a black and white image of Rodrigo with a bandage on her neck, covering the  fictional vampire bite. The tone of the image suggests a darker turn lyrically, which would mark a mature departure from the angsty pop-punk reclamation of “SOUR.”

Rodrigo’s longtime close friend and fellow musician Conan Gray was quick to support her message. Gray jokingly commented “I know what you are…” in reference to an iconic scene from the ever-popular “Twilight” film franchise, which centers around a family of vampires.  Even actor Taylor Lautner, who stars as werewolf Jacob Black in the film franchise, commented “K WHO TF BIT YOU” on the big announcement.

Fanged Fan Theories

The Twilight themed comments have fans theorizing that a matching movie themed music video will accompany the track upon its release. The singer has previously stated that she is a fan of the supernatural franchise.

Others compared the relatively long hiatus between releases to Taylor Swift‘s hiding period between her “1989” and “Reputation” albums. Swift famously was accused of lying about not giving Kanye West permission to use her name in his song “Famous”, amid mounting criticism regarding her personal life.

Rodrigo similarly found herself in the spotlight for her personal life outside of her music. Her debut smash hit single “driver’s license” has long been suspected to reference her prior “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” costar Joshua Bassett and fellow actress-musician Sabrina Carpenter. The alleged love triangle captivated the eyes of the internet, with fans of Rodrigo eventually sending threats to Bassett that triggered heart problems.

Some then accused Rodrigo of not doing enough to stop fans from attacking the other two points of the alleged love triangle, despite her being new to the industry and never promoting hate towards them in her music or on her own social media accounts. Because of the public’s hyper focus on the young singer, some sense that Rodrigo’s sophomore album will reclaim her public persona a la Taylor Swift’s “Reputation.” Rodrigo has spoken about Swift’s inspiration behind her work.
