The New York Times Company and Amazon have entered a multi-year licensing agreement that will allow Amazon to integrate editorial content from The New York Times, NYT Cooking, and The Athletic into a range of its AI-powered services, the companies announced Wednesday.
As part of the deal, Amazon will use licensed content for both real-time display within its consumer products, such as Alexa, and for training its proprietary foundation models. The companies described the agreement as an expansion of their existing partnership.
“This broadens the companies’ existing relationship, and will bring additional value to Amazon customers and bring Times journalism to wider audiences,” the companies said in a joint statement.
The licensing agreement includes “real-time display of summaries and short excerpts of Times content within Amazon products and services” as well as use in AI model training, according to the announcement. It will also incorporate direct links to full Times content within Amazon platforms.
The companies stated that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to delivering global news and information across Amazon’s AI systems. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
This announcement follows broader industry discussions around the use of journalistic content to train artificial intelligence systems. By securing a formal licensing deal, The New York Times Company becomes one of the first major media organizations to align with a tech company for AI-related content use publicly.
The companies have not specified which Amazon products beyond Alexa will incorporate Times content, nor have they disclosed a timeline for when the integrations will become available to users.
