Jamie Foxx is set to return to the stage with his upcoming stand-up special, “What Had Happened Was…,” premiering on Netflix on December 10. In this highly anticipated comedy hour, the Oscar-winning actor will address the medical emergency that left him hospitalized and fighting for his life last year.
In April 2023, Foxx was hospitalized in Atlanta due to a sudden and serious medical complication. While the official cause of his condition has not been disclosed, Foxx has hinted at the severity of his ordeal in various statements since then. Most recently, in an interview with Art of Dialogue, he shared that the incident began with a “bad headache.” He then experienced a troubling 20-day period during which he had no memory of the events that transpired.
Earlier this year, while receiving an honor from the African American Film Critics Association, Foxx expressed his intent to finally share his story with the world, noting that he planned to do so “in a funny way.” This approach aligns with Foxx’s comedic roots and his philosophy of using humor to cope with challenging situations.
“Getting back to my stand-up roots has been refreshing,” Foxx said, acknowledging that it has been nearly two decades since his last comedy special in 2003. During a series of performances in Atlanta over three nights in October, he reportedly touched on the overwhelming support he received from fans, as well as the online rumors surrounding his hospitalization.
In a teaser clip released by Netflix, Foxx states, “If I can stay funny, I could stay alive… I’m back.” This sentiment highlights his resilience and determination to return to performing, showcasing how comedy has always been a vital part of his identity.
The special is directed by Hamish Hamilton and produced by a team that includes Foxx himself, along with Datari Turner, Marcus King, James Longman, Raj Kapoor, Hamilton, and Katy Mullan. It will be produced under Foxxhole Productions and Done + Dusted, further cementing Foxx’s commitment to the project.

In addition to the stand-up special, Foxx will also return to Netflix in the action-comedy film “Back in Action,” which is set to premiere on January 17, 2024. The film, co-starring Cameron Diaz, was in production at the time of his medical emergency. Filming was temporarily halted but has since resumed, with Foxx eager to return to his role.
Following his hospitalization, Foxx was also temporarily replaced as the host of the Fox game show “Beat Shazam” during his recovery period. His health scare prompted a wave of support from fans and fellow celebrities alike, highlighting the impact he has had on the entertainment industry.
Foxx’s upcoming special promises to provide insight into not only his personal struggles but also the power of laughter in healing. By addressing his medical emergency in a comedic light, he aims to connect with audiences while offering a glimpse into his journey of recovery and resilience.
As the premiere date approaches, fans are eagerly anticipating the return of Foxx’s signature humor and storytelling. The special is expected to resonate with viewers who appreciate the blend of comedy and personal narrative, making it a must-watch for fans of the actor and comedy lovers alike.
