Amazon MGM Studios is officially developing a Mass Effect TV series, Variety has reported, marking a major step forward for the popular video game franchise. The project will be written and executive produced by Daniel Casey, known for his work on F9: The Fast Saga. Casey will be joined by executive producers Karim Zreik, under his Cedar Tree Productions banner, as well as Ari Arad and Michael Gamble from EA. Cedar Tree is currently under an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios.
While plot details for the series remain under wraps, the development of a Mass Effect TV show has been anticipated for some time. In 2021, reports surfaced that Amazon was in talks to bring the beloved game franchise to television. However, there had been no major updates until now. This news also comes after multiple unsuccessful attempts to develop a Mass Effect feature film.
The Mass Effect video game series, developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts (EA), first launched in 2007 and quickly became a critical and commercial success. The franchise includes three core titles—Mass Effect (2007), Mass Effect 2 (2010), and Mass Effect 3 (2012)—as well as Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017), which introduced a new storyline and a new protagonist, set in a distant part of the galaxy. Additionally, the franchise has expanded into mobile games, an animated film, novels, comics, and more.
At the heart of the original trilogy is Commander Shepard, a human soldier in the 22nd century who is tasked with saving humanity from an ancient alien race called the Reapers. The narrative of the games is known for its deep character development, intricate moral choices, and sprawling intergalactic storylines. While Andromeda moved the timeline forward, introducing new characters and a new storyline, fans are hopeful that the series will revisit the original narrative in some capacity. The franchise continues to have a massive fanbase, and the Mass Effect universe remains a key part of modern science fiction gaming.
Daniel Casey brings significant experience to the project. In addition to his work on F9, he has worked on the sci-fi drama Kin and contributed rewrites to 10 Cloverfield Lane. He is represented by CAA, Writ Large, and Hansen Jacobson. Casey’s involvement is expected to bring a polished and action-driven approach to the adaptation, aligning with the high-stakes nature of the Mass Effect franchise.
Karim Zreik, another executive producer on the project, brings his expertise in producing successful television series to the table. Zreik was formerly an executive at Marvel Television, where he worked on hit shows such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Punisher, and Legion. His experience in adapting complex comic book properties into successful TV shows will likely prove valuable as Mass Effect navigates its transition from a video game to a live-action series. Zreik is represented by Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.
Ari Arad, another executive producer, is well-versed in adapting video game and comic book properties for the screen. Arad has been involved in producing the Borderlands and Uncharted adaptations, as well as the 2006 Blade TV series. He has also worked on major superhero films like Iron Man and Ghost Rider. His track record in producing action-driven content and working with large franchises could help guide Mass Effect through its adaptation process.

Despite the excitement surrounding the announcement, details about the series’ cast, release date, and story remain scarce. Given the success of similar adaptations like The Witcher and The Last of Us, Mass Effect is poised to capture a wide audience of both fans of the games and newcomers to the franchise. The presence of experienced producers and writers suggests that the series will be faithful to the original material while also expanding the universe for a broader television audience.
The Mass Effect TV series marks a significant moment for Amazon, which has been investing heavily in expanding its original content lineup. With other high-profile series such as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Boys, the addition of a Mass Effect series further positions Amazon as a key player in the growing market for premium science fiction and fantasy television.
