Instagram Will Now Alert Parents if Teens Search for Suicide or Self-Harm Content

Instagram is rolling out a new feature that will notify parents when their teenager repeatedly searches for terms related to suicide or self-harm — a significant escalation in Meta’s efforts to position itself as a responsible platform for young users amid mounting regulatory and public pressure. Starting next week, parents enrolled in Instagram’s parental supervision tools in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Canada will receive an alert via email, text, or WhatsApp if their teen makes multiple searches for phrases associated with suicide or self-harm within a short period of time. The rollout will expand to other regions later this
